February 2008: what you see is not a convention.
We decided to call it double exposure, using a term from the gallery, from art institutions. However, if this statement is far from the world of graffiti, the project of the Rampa Prenestina by WALLS is not.
Using the space of the spiral ramp, which is spontaneusly painted since a long while, we called 33 writers to make it repaint again. The pieces of these writers are reflected by 85 photos that we have chosen.
Graffiti, the present, in front of pictures of the past, of the early 90’s in Rome, showing the places, the faces and the “letters” of those moments of excitement and discovery.
Obviously the story of those years can’t be contained in these photos, as the writers invited don’t represent all the Rome’s contemporary scene souls. Our project is to share the documents of that time, which is when graffiti start to become part of the city, in order to create an archive of the writing. The possibility, for who was not there, to see where borned what is still stongly present on the walls of the capital.
The exhibition is also a tribute to some memorable figures of the underground scene of this city: CRASH KID and MAKO.
We thanks the NSB, the historic Roman crew, for most of the images that we decided to expose and who kindly granted, especially Giorgio “Tekne” photographic memory of some of the founding moments of the history of graffiti in Rome. The other images are part of the archives of Trota, Artan and Kosher.
